Online poker is an interesting way to not only pass time, but have great entertainment as well. The presence of numerous online poker websites has enabled players from all over the world to enjoy the game of poker while sitting at home. One may register with these online poker sites to play either for entertainment or with real money. While some players adapt to the online form of playing quickly, others start ordinarily, losing a lot, in the initial games. Therefore, if you are new to poker and specifically online poker, it is recommended that you go through the strategies formulated for beginners so that you may minimize your odds of losing. The basic strategy to beat the odds is to avoid the mistakes, which beginners usually make. Therefore, by following the given tips, you may reduce your chances of losing.

Avoid distractions: the foremost thing, which you can do to reduce your chances of losing, is to avoid distractions. The distractions can be in the form of loud music, television or anything else, which you might think could distract you. The best way to increase the chances of winning is by not only paying attention to your play, but to pay attention to the game of the other players as well.

Avoid talking: people try to be friendly especially with new players to make them talk out their strategy. In addition, there is no need to be friendly as this could make you lose focus and commit mistakes. Therefore, it is imperative to be quiet while a game of poker is on, since you do not want to lose.

Consider response-time: online poker involves playing the game with players not present physically. Therefore, it is difficult to read the faces of the opponents to judge what is going on in their minds. However, in online poker, players get the opportunity to fold, raise or choose other game related activity by clicking on the respective options. Online players judge other player’s cards by judging the response-time taken by a particular player. If for example a player takes too long to choose an action, the others might think that it is a weak hand which is making him to take so long. Similarly, checking too quickly can make the opponents think that the hand is either very strong or very weak. Betting too quickly again may make them assume, that the player has a strong hand. Therefore, it is better to understand these signs and use them for your own benefit.

Strategies like these work not only in case of beginners but for everyone playing online poker regularly. The only difference is that regular players get used to the idea of playing online and avoid the common mistakes committed by beginners. Therefore, if you want to improve your chances of winning and not lose, then you may avoid the mistakes and hone your skills by playing regular online poker.

A common error made by many novice players (and a shockingly high amount of those who should know better) is feeling the need to participate on every hand dealt. A successful player only plays 20-30% of dealt hands. Much like a professional baseball player who is able to sign a multimillion dollar contract by maintaining a batting average of .300, the successful poker player knows that the majority of the time another player will walk away with the pot.

With that in mind it is important to play aggressively once you get a hand that you are confident in. Remember, 70% of the time other players are ready to fold in search of a hand that they think favors them! Be ready to force the weak players out with your aggressive bets. If you are confident you have the strongest hand in the game, raise the bet! The main reason for being aggressive is to have those with weak hands fold early on, as some tend to hang on looking for the miracle draw to win the hand. By forcing their hand early you are lowering the chance of those miracle hands and also ensuring you win the pot. It is always better to win a smaller pot than take a chance that another players draws that miracle hand late in the game.

Your table image is also very important. Build a strong table image by not bluffing early in your play. Bluffing early marks you as a bluffer and people will call your bluff 100% of the time. Play good cards and throw away junk cards, have the other players at the table see you are only playing strong hands. This sets up the opportunity for you to use a good bluff later in the game as you have conditioned the others players into thinking that when you raise you have the cards to win the hand.

Studying other players and their betting behavior is equally as important. It is too easy to get wrapped up in your own game and miss the “tells” the other players may be exhibiting. Knowing if they bet aggressively or typically call with a strong hand empowers you and your betting decisions.

Most important of all is know when to quit! You should always be sharp and focused when at the betting table. Fatigue leads to mental errors and ends up costing you money. Frustration is another sign that you are ready to call it a night, or at least take a break. Play smart and you will win smart.

For a game where most players rarely consider luck, there are lots of superstitions in poker. When you mention that someone was lucky in that poker tournament they won, be careful of how you say it. For instance, if you mention that you were unlucky, your luck may never change.

Ok, that may sound a bit ubsurd, but poker is a game loaded with superstitions. Did you know that if you are playing a game with two seperate decks and you are asked to pick the deck, you should always pick the deck of cards that is furthest from you? Or, how about If you get a run of bad cards, you must sit on a hankerchief to break your bad luck? It’s actually considered good luck to blow through a deck of cards while they are being shuffled.

Some other fascinating poker superstitions are:

You can change the run of cards by walking around your chair three times.

The luckiest seat at the poker table faces the door.

The unluckiest seat has it’s back to a fireplace.

When changing seats, you should always do so clockwise.

The unluckiest poker card is the four of clubs.

It’s very unlucky to sit with your legs crossed at the poker table.

Friday is a bad day for playing cards.

The 13th is also a bad day, regardless of what day of the week it is.

For being such a game full of skill, many people still hold on to the old superstitions.

Many Tournament millionaires are high school dropouts, out of work dads, or retired seniors. You can be one too with a few good poker lessons.

Poker to me has always been a little bit of luck and a whole lot of information. An Online Poker Tournament has been proven achievable but the first disadvantage I see is my “whole lot of information” is going to be next to nil.

I’m only going to see other players and myself as caricatures on my screen. Facial expressions, hand gestures, body motions will all be absent, as well as eye squinting, blinking or twitching – those ‘giveaways’ on TV and why many use sunglasses. Add to this the screen names: how do I know that Tiny Tina isn’t some card shark from Vegas alluding to be female and harmless?

I’m going to have to compensate for this not-so-small handicap. Basically anybody’s poker actions are six — whether you play online or off… betting, folding, calling, raising, re-raising, or check-raising. So that’s a given. My observations are going to fall in the realm of a good site selection, a game selection (there are many tables), careful note-taking and money management.

And while all players are indeed in caricature-form, they still have behavior that can be noted. I can put their screen names under one of two lists: “tight players” or “loose players”. It will help to observe a few hands and label them before I decide to sit in. Too many tight players and I might look at another table.

Tight players are strong opponents. Even as a novice they will fold a poor deal and play a good one. When they raise, more often than not they have the cards to back it up with. I think it would benefit me to keep them to my right – that way, I get to act after they do. Loose players are often called ‘maniacs’ because they love to bet and raise with very little in hand to back it up.

As I see it, they are best if kept to my left in playing online poker. Advantages are: I get to see how the other players react to his/her betting before it’s my turn. And, at times if I check to the maniac who bets of course, this allows everyone else to call before I raise the bet and collect the additional monies. Get it?

Of course a table can also be tight or loose. Ideally I believe a loose table is better and the first sign of this would be how many players see the flop; the more the better – if many are playing to the flop, the pots are healthier. I read where 30% of the table playing all the way to the flop is a good measure. Anything less is not worthwhile sitting in.

So, it’s time now to choose a fictitious name and sign up for the best poker school where I can (as they say) become a professional in a matter of months rather than years by playing the game with “fun” money until I declare I am ready for a real investment.

Are you aiming for a poker tournament? If so, why not follow me as I write future Articles on this issue. Also share what you have learned, I’d be happy to hear from you and include your observations.

The World Series of Poker is the most anticipated and crowning event in the world of poker. It’s been around for so long and its history has been clouded by its popularity that people tend to forget just how great the WSOP was when it first started. Over the past couple of years, thousands of people have been trying to cash a quick buck off its popularity, and hundreds of web sites have suddenly popped up, but despite all of this the WSOP has been around when poker was considered serious card playing. It wasn’t a fad that was made to be televised into some sort of fashion. It was quality poker.

Back in the day, men smoked cigars and sipped whisky while eyeing up their opponents. It was a game made for men like Nicolas Dandolos, commonly referred to as Nick the Greek, and Benny Binion. These two were champion gamblers and poker players back during the 1940s. It was no wonder then when Nick the Greek approached Binion to set up a world class match. Nick challenged the supposed champion of all poker players, Johnny Moss.

Binion agreed to the plan and he set up the match between Dandolos and Moss. There was one exception though, Binion made sure to attract as much attention to the event as possible by holding it in public. It was to be on public display and seen as a marathon. After five long months of discussion and compromises, all parties agreed to continue with the match. Thus, the World Series of Poker was born in 1949. It was a grueling event where the players only took breaks to catch up on sleep. Moss came out on top and reportedly took home around $2 million in cash, nearly an entire casino’s worth in 1949.

Nearly 21 years later, Binion decided to try his hand with the WSOP again. It was 1970, and this time he officially deemed it the WSOP. And once again, Johnny Moss did what he does best and walked away with the pot.

By now Binion knew he had something particularly special in the poker world. He continued the World Series of Poker yearly from then on. By 1982, there were 104 top poker players signed up for the WSOP. Now in 2006, at the height of the poker craze, everyone believes he or she is the next gift to poker. Last year, there were 5,619 people entered into the main event. This year, the numbers are predicted to be over 8,000 entrants. The size of the WSOP has changed, but the quality has not. It is the biggest, most anticipated poker tournament for any poker player.

Poker tables are of vital importance in a poker game. Whether physical or virtual, no poker game can be played without a poker table. Poker tables come in varied shapes and sizes and can also be customized to suit any poker game specifications. There are no fixed shapes or sizes for a poker table; however, the most common poker tables are mostly rectangular or hexagonal. Rectangular poker tables are usually thirty inches high and forty to forty-two inches wide, though the lengths do vary from seventy-two inches to 110 inches.

Sometimes a dealer/player may have to sit in the middle of a rectangular poker table due to the large size of the table.

Today, the Internet has made it easy to design and acquire a poker table. Some manufactures also offer custom, folding poker tables, card tables, pedestal poker tables, three-in-one poker tables, Texas Hold’em poker tables, blackjack tables, poker tabletops, and craps tables, along with matching chairs, poker cards, and other supplies to suit the needs and tastes of prospective buyers.

Then there are some multipurpose poker tables that have an attractive wooden tabletop, which can be flipped to form a roulette table, a craps table, or a six-person blackjack table. The poker table also serves the purpose of a functional storage for storing the game pieces and poker chips.

No matter in what shape or size they come in, poker tables are in demand worldwide. With the introduction of multipurpose tables, the dealers find it easy to juggle around games. The Internet has made it possible to acquire a poker table suiting your tastes and style without much difficulty.

To play a session of high ante short handed hold’em you have to be sure of some poker essential qualities like: playing the other’s hand, understanding position and being aggressive when you should be.

Let’s say you are playing a session of no limit Texas hold’em and the table must be short handed – this simply means there are free sits at the table that no one has occupied yet. The ideal table for this is the table with 4 or maybe as high as 5 opponents. Now, ante means that you bet pre flop, at the same time the blinds are placed. You decide to ante on the pre flop and your ante bet is equal to the small bet. Let’s consider the table you are playing on is a $2/$4 table, this means your ante has been of $2.

The antes, as forced bets for everyone have as a purpose to make people put money in the pot and to stimulate activity at the poker table. To prove the point of this article we will have to consider you are playing every hand, no matter what are the raises on the pre flop (unless they are way too big since that is possible this being no limit poker). This forces you to stop worrying about the pre flop value of hands and gets you right to the flop and post flop stages, the parts that actually make the whole game. You will also have to be aggressive because the bets will be high and the players are just some.

You have in this situation you are in to try and play your opponents. You have to make them to draw for a hand to beat you. At all times don’t check only call or bet. Playing the others means actually to try and play their hands. If you can correctly evaluate their hands then yours doesn’t matter so much because you already know what you are against and you can beat them.

Try to do this sometimes and you will see that overall in that session, if you played right, you will register a winning. Just think of it as an exercise that has to be done because there is the possibility that without bring forced you will never try and play aggressive and “reckless”, playing the players instead of playing your own hands. This helps you develop your aggressiveness and improves your way of seeing the opponents.

Introduction

Shorthanded (6-max) texas holdem is a different animal than ten or nine handed poker. Low limit shorthanded poker has a few more wrinkles than the higher limit variety. Much of the literature regarding shorthanded poker is aimed at the higher limits, where many post-flop battles are heads up. We will focus on games similar to the 1/2 6 max games at Party Poker

Starting Hands

As at any level of poker, starting hands are the foundation of your holdem game. On the 1/2 6 max tables, you will frequently be facing 2 or 3 opponents with VPIP’s (voluntarily put $ in the pot…) of 50 percent or more. Now, just because many of your opponents will be starting with shaky hands doesn’t mean you should stoop to their level. Texas holdem at any level is about playing starting hands with positive expected values. The other poker players’ looseness combined with the fewer number of opponents will allow you to play more hands, but it is still optimal to keep your VPIP below 30.

In general, playing 6 max, raise with any Ace with a kicker of ten or higher, King-Queen and King-Jack, and Queen-Jack suited as well as pairs down to nines. You should limp with any two cards ten or higher in any position. In the last two seats, you can play any two cards nine or higher. Suited connectors down to 65 can be played anywhere and any other hand with two suited cards 8 or higher as well as suited Aces can be played. Pocket sixes and sevens are playable anywhere. With the smaller pockets, play them if there are two limpers ahead of you. The hands you decide to play in the first two seats can be extended to some of the suited connectors or lower pairs if you are playing at an exceptionally passive table with little raising.

Steal Raises

Most of the hands we advised you to play should be opened for a raise in those rare cases when you are on the button in a pot that hasn’t been entered. Beware…stealing the blinds is very difficult in low limit shorthanded texas holdem. Most poker players playing this level will call your raise with virtually anything in the big blind. Many will call from the small blind. Steal raises from the cutoff seat are generally not advisable. You may stretch your raising requirements SLIGHTLY if first in after two have folded, but remember you’ve still got 60% of your opponents yet to act. Raise when you can expect to narrow the field to one, for then you will be in the driver’s seat.

Aggression

Shorthanded (6-max) holdem is typically characterized by aggression. This is true in the low limit shorthanded 6 max games as well, however, the unbridled aggression effective at higher limits may not serve you as well in low limit poker. You must remain aggressive, but beware that the conditions are different and you may not be able to bully your way to as many pots. Typically, your preflop raises will be met by two or more callers. If you raise with two high cards and miss the flop, you are probably behind in the hand. With two opponents, we advocate betting the flop. One luxury of low limit poker is that your bets will not often be met with raises or check-raises.

The 6-max tables are filled with calling stations…your best hands will get callers, but if you raise with KQ and there’s an ace and two rags on the flop, you will not be able to bet your opponent’s pocket twos off the hand most of the time. Similarly, hands like pocket sevens that are good raising hands shorthanded in higher limit poker are not profitable when raised at low limits. With multiple callers expected, you will probably have to hit a set to win…so raising increases your investment and is a poor play from an expected value standpoint.

HitTheFlop

If you’ve hit your flop, then you must be extremely aggressive. Slow playing is generally a no-no (unless you have a set or are heads up, then there are times when a slow play is called for). Remember, most of these low-limit hold em players will call you down with hands like middle or bottom pair, a gutshot or even an overcard or two. Don’t allow them to bad beat you cheaply. Make them pay to see their longshot draws. Extract your money from them when you’ve got the edge. Remember also that in shorthanded poker games top pair with mediocre kicker is a much better hand than it is on full tables. If I flop top pair with my K2s in the small blind, i am usually going to check raise. Check-raising out of the blinds is very profitable.

Late players will bet their gutshots or bottom pairs, and, more importantly, will pay you off to the river after your check-raise. This is an important play…not only will it earn you money when it works but it will discourage players from trying to steal pots. Check-raises with just top pair are extremely rare at low limit holdem, and your opponents will make note of it and fear you. Any flop in which you have top pair should be raised, unless there was a preflop raiser. Then, use your judgement as to whether he should be checkraised, depending on the board and his raising frequency.

Shorthanded Poker

Low limit shorthanded (6 max) texas holdem is a game swimming with fish. If you play tight, aggressive poker you will win at an astonishing rate due to the poor play of your opponents. Stay aggressive, but bear in mind that the number of opponents will dictate whether you should go full throttle or put on the brakes. Hop onto the 1/2 6 max holdem tables at Party Poker today, follow these guidelines and I guarantee you’ll be a profitable poker player.

One of the most controversial players in the world of poker, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. is often known by the not-so-affectionate moniker of “The Poker Brat.” But while his antics at the table have been known to ruffle a few feathers, Hellmuth has also been one of the most dominating players over the course of his career. In fact, many fans of the game view him as the face of professional poker, especially Texas Hold ‘em.

Born July 16th, 1964 in Madison, Wisconsin, Phillip J. Hellmuth, Jr. was the oldest of five children. Being the son of a successful university assistant dean, Phil excelled in school and looked poised to follow in his father’s academic footsteps. Fate, however, had other plans.

Phil enrolled in the University of Wisconsin, and it was here that his poker career got off the ground. He was initially invited to play in cash poker games at the student union, but soon found that the low-dollar games didn’t present enough of a challenge. Months later, he was competing against professors and other members of the campus community in $100 buy-in games. Hellmuth did so well that he was able to pay off his student loans and still have a $20,000 bankroll left over. At this point, he dropped out of college in his junior year and became a professional poker player.

In 1989, the 24-year-old Hellmuth defeated Johnny Chan to become the youngest champion of the World Series of Poker main event. As of 2006, he has won an impressive nine World Series of Poker bracelets (bracelets are awarded to tournament winners), all in the Texas Hold ‘em events. He was the season three champion of Late Night Poker, and he defeated Chris Ferguson in 2005 to win the inaugural National Heads-Up Poker Championship. As of 2006, his total live tournament winnings exceed $7,200,000.

His World Series of Poker accomplishments include: first place finishes in The Championship Event in 1989, Limit Hold ‘em in 1992, 1993, and 2003, two No Limit Hold ‘em events in 1993, one in 2001, and one in 2003, and Pot Limit Hold ‘em in 1997.

However, for all his accomplishments, Phil has yet to win at the final table of a World Poker Tour event. He finished fourth at the Lucky Chances event (season one) and third at Foxwoods (season two). No doubt, this brings a smile to the face of his detractors.

Hellmuth is also involved in many ventures away from the card table. He frequently contributes to Card Player Magazine, as well as having penned Play Poker like the Pros, Bad Beats and Lucky Draws, Poker Brat (which was on the best-seller list for a month), and The Greatest Poker Hands Ever Played. He has also made several instructional videos, including Phil Hellmuth’s Million Dollar Poker Secrets. He is a spokesperson for the Ultimate Bet online poker room, and has been collaborating with Oakley on a signature line of sunglasses (no doubt, to compliment his signature line of clothing). Phil also writes a syndicated column which is printed in over 40 U.S. newspapers.

When he’s not traveling around the world playing poker, Hellmuth makes his home in Palo Alto, California with his wife Katherine (a psychiatrist at Stanford University) and two sons, Phillip III and Nicholas. His favorite food is salmon, while his favorite music and movies range from Pearl Jam and The American President to The Rolling Stones and The Matrix.

He estimates that his skill at poker and fondness for self-promotion may earn him as much as $400,000,000 in his lifetime. Then again, would you expect anything less from the face of modern professional poker?
